Budget patience for the first ten chapters — Gateshead and Lowood are deliberately slow, and everything Jane does later is forged there. From Thornfield onward the book becomes a mystery with strange noises in the attic, and reading it in 30-minute-plus sittings keeps the dread accumulating properly; this is a poor book for two-page fragments. The final third — flight, moor, return — reads fastest of all. Most readers finish the last 150 pages in two sittings without planning to.
